Scanty rains can wash out auto sales: FADA

Fada, president, Manish Raj Singhania, has said, that albeit, India’s automobile industry showed yearly jump in auto sales in all the segments in August, 2023. But, going forward, insufficient rainfall, can ironically wash-out auto sales.

The country‘s top automobile dealers body, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association or Fada has said that automobile sale in the country has seen 9 per cent jump on year-on-year (YoY) basis to 18.18 lakh units in August, 2023 from 16.74 lakh units in August, 2022. Automobile sale has shown yearly jump in all the segments be it passenger vehicles (PVs), two-wheelers (2Ws) or commercial vehicles (CVs).

Total passenger vehicle sale has increased 7 per cent in the said month to 3.15 lakh units from 2.95 lakh units in Aug’22.

Maruti Suzuki continues to clock the highest monthly sale in the PV segment: Fada

Japan-based automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has sold highest number of  vehicles in August, 2023. The automotive company sold 1.33 lakh units of passenger vehicles in August, 2023, commanding a market share of 42 per cent up from 39 per cent in August, 2022.

Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor continued neck-to-neck competition in the PV segment. The latter managed to hold up to second position with sale of 47,000 units in Aug’23 boasting of market share of almost 15 per cent. While, the former managed to hold up on to the third position, reporting sale of 39,000 PV units with 12 per cent market share.

Total two-wheeler sales in the country also jumped 6 per cent to 12.54 lakh units in Aug’23 from 11.80 lakh units in same month previous year.

In the two-wheeler segment, Hero Motocorp, continued to roar on India’s roads registering domestic sale of 3.48 lakh units in the said month. The New Delhi-based 2W manufacturer boasts of 27 per cent market share as of August, 2023. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) and TVS Motor secured second and third positions in the two-wheeler segment registering sale of 3.10 lakh and 2.24 lakh units in Aug’23, respectively.

Scarcity of rain can invariably wash out auto sales: Fada

Fada, president, Manish Raj Singhania, has said, that albeit, India’s automobile industry showed yearly jump in auto sales in all the relevant segments in August, 2023. But, going forward, he is cautiously optimistic about the future. According to him, insufficient rain can wash out auto sales in the upcoming festive season and even in period after that. This is because, insufficient rainfall can not only impact yield of Kharif crops but can also impact Rabi crops sowing. Thereby impacting consumer demand in the hinterland, leading to fall in the sale of two-wheelers and tractors as well.

Talking about tractor sales, it showed a  jump of 14  per cent to 73,849 units in Aug’23 as against 65,018 units in the year-ago period.

Three-wheeler retail sales, on the other hand, saw a jump of 66 per cent to 99,907 units in Aug’23 from 60,132 units in Aug’22.

While, commercial vehicle registrations increased by 3 per cent to 75,294 units last month from 72,940 units in the same month last year.
