After the transport ministry’s notification on Aadhar-based authentication and online registration of 18 RTO-related services including learner’s licence, driving licence renewal, and duplicate DL, applicants rejoiced the new update that they need not visit regional RTO offices for it.

The validity of a driving licence is for a period of 20 years from the time it is issued. If you do not renew it after this time, the licence expires and you are liable to be fined as per the rules of the 1988 Motor Vehicle Act. Hence, it is advised that you get your licence renewed instead of applying for a new driver’s licence.

But if you are the one whose renewal date is due or you need a duplicate licence, but don’t know how to go about it, then here is a step by step guide:

Step 1: Log in to https://parivahan.gov.in and go to Online Services and select driving licence-related services from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Now select the state for which a driving licence needs to be renewed.

Step 3: After selecting the state you will move to the next page which has many options related to a driving licence. Select ‘Apply for DL renewal’ option from the screen.

Step 4: You will be directed to a page which will explain all the instruction of application submission. Read it all carefully, download form 1-A if you are above 40 years and click on continue.

Step 5: Now will see a page where you need to fill in all the details like DL number, Birthdate, state, RTO, etc. and then click on proceed.

Step 6: Now, confirm your details as displayed and press proceed button.

Step 7:  A new page will open up. Here you will see a page that will ask you to tick on the options under services on your driving license. Select ‘Renewal of DL’ from the list.

Step 8: You will be now directed to the page where you will see all your driving licence details. Click on update, fill-up the barcode, and click on submit. Once you click on submit, you will get an application number.

Step 9: The next step is to download the form. Fill in any other relevant personal and/or vehicle-related details. Upload your photograph and signature and click submit.

Step 10: The last step is to make the payment for which you will get an acknowledgment via SMS, further, you will get the date for the slot to visit the RTO for verification. Once the document verification is completed, you will be issued a renewed driving licence.
