Suppose you forget to carry your ATM/debit card and suddenly have a dire need of cash. But you have none in the vicinity who can lend you some money?

Stumped? Not really. Not anymore.

NCR Corporation, which makes automated teller machines (ATMs), has launched first UPI-enabled cardless cash withdrawal ATMs in the country. The first such ATM has been launched in partnership with City Union Bank. Unlike normal ATMs, it generates a QR code.

Using this facility, customers can withdraw cash using their mobile phones with any UPI-enabled app such as BHIM, Paytm, GPay etc. And they won’t need to carry their cards.

Customers need to scan the QR code at the ATM machine and authorise the transaction from the mobile app. The QR code being dynamic, it will change with each transaction and it can’t be copied, which will increase the security of the transactions, said NCR authorities.

To use this service one has to first visit a new-generation ATM. Inside the ATM, one has to open any UPI app such as Google Pay, BHIM, Paytm, PhonePe or Amazon Pay on the smartphone.

Opening the app, one has to scan the QR code displayed on the ATM screen.

The step consists in keying in on the ATM the amount of cash one needs to withdraw, and then press the “proceed” button.

After pressing the “proceed” button, you will have to key in a 6-digit UPI PIN that will be delivered to your phone. Once you type the PIN correctly, the cash will come out.

Right now, there is a ceiling of Rs 5,000 that one withdraw in this manner.

According to NCR Corporation authorities, the software of existing ATMs can be upgraded to incorporate this service. No change of hardware is required. The authorities of NCR told PTI that they are in the final stage of discussion with some public and private sector banks to offer this service in different parts of the country.

All City Union Bank ATMs have been upgraded to offer this service.
