Be careful if you consume more meat and sea food. A shocking news has come about meat and sea food. Banned antibiotics have been detected in seafood and meat. It is considered a threat to the health of humans and animals. After this, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) of India has been asked to monitor it. In a meeting of DTAB held last month, it was revealed that banned antibiotics have been found in aquaculture including shrimp. During the meeting, such measures have been demanded that the availability of banned antibiotics and their use in shrimp or animals used for food should be banned.
The DTAB has also asked Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) to investigate the situation. Also said that stakeholders should be consulted for formulating a strategy in this matter and for further action in the matter.
The Advisory Board also recommended to discuss the matter in the Drugs Advisory Committee (DAC) of the Drugs Controller General of India to ensure that the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules are properly implemented. The board does not allow antibiotics to be used on animals that produce food or are used for food.
Health hazard Every human or any animal can take antibiotics only to a limited level. By taking antibiotics in excess, the human body or the body of any animal becomes inactive towards the antibiotic. This condition is called antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In such a situation, those who regularly come in contact with these medicines through food, the antibiotics given to them when they are sick, do not work. This is a big danger in terms of health.
Which drugs are banned In 2017, the Union Health Ministry directed several agencies to prevent the increase in AMR cases. The ministry had said that AMR has been found in animals whose meat is used for food in India. Its level is very high in sea food. In 2018, the country’s top food regulator FSSAI banned various antibiotics and veterinary drugs, including nitrofurans such as furaltadone, furazolidone, nitrofurantoin, nitrofurazone and chloramphenicol, at any stage of processing of their meat and meat products, poultry-eggs, seafood or banned the use of any type of fish and fishery products.
