The state of Odisha has recorded over 8,216 new coronavirus infection cases and 15 fresh fatalities. This has pushed Odisha’s covid-19 caseload to 4,79,752 and death toll to 2,088, as per a health department official. The state has at present 73,548 active cases, while 4,04,063 people have recovered from the disease.
Out of the 8,216 new cases, 4,684 were reported from quarantine centers and 3,532 detected during contact tracing.
The highest number of fresh cases at 1,271, were reported from Khurda district, which comprises the state capital Bhubaneswar. This was followed by Sundargarh with 636, Cuttack with 447, and Puri with 402.
Khurda district had also registered the maximum number of fresh covid-19 fatalities at five. In Rayagada, three patients have succumbed to the disease, while in Kalahandi and Sundergarh, two patients in each of the districts have died. This was followed by one each in the district of Cuttack, Puri, and Subarnapur.
The state has so far conducted over 1.02 crore sample tests for COVID-19, including 43,682 on 3 May, and the positivity rate stands at 4.67 per cent.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had earlier declared working journalists of the state as frontline covid-19 warriors.
Following the government’s decision, a special session has been organized in Odisha to inoculate the journalists covered under Gopabandhu Health Insurance Scheme, the state health official added.
