Keeping in mind the difficulties faced by the taxpayers, the last date for linking Aadhaar with PAN (Permanent Account Number) card has been extended by the government to March 31, 2022. An extension of six months has been granted for the linkage. Earlier, the Central government had also issued a notification with regards to the extension of the last date for intimating the Aadhaar number and linking with PAN thereof to September 30, 2021, which has now been extended to March 31, 2022.
If a person is already holding the PAN card and are eligible to obtain Aadhaar number or already holding one, then it should be intimated to the Income Tax department. Failure to do this, will result in PAN becoming inoperative.
PAN card is required to be quoted mandatorily to perform several transactions. So, if the PAN card becomes inoperative, an individual may be unable to complete the 18 financial transactions, where quoting of the PAN is mandatory. Hence, to carry out such transactions the PAN and the Aadhaar has to be linked.
For linking Aadhaar with PAN card, an individual can go to the e-filing website of the Income Tax department. Then, by either using the log-in credentials or without logging in, the linking of Aadhaar and PAN can be done. CBDT has made it clear that for filing Income Tax returns, PAN and Aadhaar linkage is mandatory, unless specifically exempted.
