Total active wireless subscribers stand at 104.64 crore in July 2023
According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), people are flocking en masse to buy SIM cards. Telecoms have added four times more wireless subscribers in July 2023 vis-a-vis year-ago period. In July 2023, telecoms added 26.67 lakh net wireless subscribers up from only 6.39 lakh in July 2022. Total active wireless subscribers stood at 104.64 crore in July 2023. It was 101.32 crore in July 2022. Active wireless subscribers increased by 3.32 crore or 3.28 per cent in the one year period.
Reliance Jio continued to dominate wireless segment of the telecom industry. Jio’s market share in wireless segment increased to 38.60 per cent in July 2023. While, that of its rival Bharti Airtel has increased to 32.74 per cent. On the other hand, VI’s market share in wireless segment has fallen to 19.92 per cent in July, this year.

All together, market share of private telecoms in the wireless segment currently stand at 91.26 per cent while that of PSUs stand at 8.74 per cent. Private telecoms continue to garner market share in the relevant category. While, their public counterparts continue to lose market share.

Total active wireline subscribers stand at 3.06 crore in July 2023
Same story unfolds in wireline segment as well. Net wireline subscriber addition in July 2023 jumped more than four times to 2.91 lakh subscribers from 61,478 subscribers in July 2022. Total wireline subscribers in the country stand at 3.06 crore.
Airtel and Jio have gained market share in last one year in this particular segment as well. While, VI’s market share has fallen to 2.21 per cent YoY in July 2023 from 2.56 per cent in July 2022. Jio’s market share in wireline segment increased to 33.16 per cent. While, that of its rival Bharti Airtel increased to 25.03 per cent.

BSNL has larger market share in wireline segment than VI:
BSNL’s market share stand at 21.02 per cent in the wireline segment in July 2023.
BSNL was market leader in wireline segment one year ago:
Interesting thing is that debt laden and troubled mount public sector telecom BSNL was the market leader in this segment with a market share of 27.89 per cent in July 2022. But, it lost market share in this one year period. BSNL’s market share is down to 21.02 per cent in July 2023 from 27.89 per cent.
While, its private peer, Reliance Jio constantly gained market share in the same period and became numero uno in this segment.

All together, market share of private telecoms in the wireline segment currently stands at 71.56 per cent while that of PSUs fell to 28.44 per cent in July 2023.
Overall, total telephone subscribers currently stand at 117.69 crore in July 2023, up 0.28 per cent from 117.37 crore in July 2022.
