The Monsoon session of the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Monday amid an uproar by Opposition MPs. The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned for one hour till 12.25 pm as a mark of respect to departed sitting MPs Raghunath Mohapatra and Rajeev Satav.
As the session was about to begin, the Opposition created a ruckus, preventing Prime Minister Narendra Modi from introducing the newly inducted Union ministers.
Even after Speaker Om Birla’s repeated pleas to maintain proper conduct, the disruptions continued. The house was adjourned after nearly 40 minutes till 2 pm.
Maddila Gurumoorthy (YSR Congress), Mangal Suresh Angadi (BJP), M P Abdussamad Samadani (IUML), Vijayakumar (Congress) took oath as the House convened after a gap of nearly four months.
The opposition members started shouting slogans and disrupted the proceedings, just when PM Modi was about to introduce the four newly elected members
On July 18, Opposition parties had organised a meeting after an all-party meet convened by the government to discuss the strategy for the monsoon session of Parliament.
Several opposition parties had planned to move adjournment notices in both houses of Parliament on Monday over issues pertaining to farmer strike and Covid-19 among others.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh rebuked the Opposition for not allowing the prime minister to introduce the new ministers. He said this happened for the first time in his 24 years of parliamentary career.
“The strength of Parliament is in maintaining healthy traditions. Both Opposition and Treasury should maintain healthy traditions. Even if one or 50 new ministers are inducted, the whole House listens to their introduction by the prime minister with decorum. This is sad, unfortunate and an unhealthy approach,” Singh, added.
