Delhi is set to break the 46-year-old record of monsoon showers. According to an India Today report, the Safdarjung Observatory recorded 1,100 mm of rainfall. A rainfall of 1,150 mm of rainfall was recorded in 1975.
After a ten day long dry spell, monsoon is expected to revive in the National Capital from Friday night, according to the forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The monsoon had entered a silent phase, without a trace of rain since August 9. Weather officials had said that the hot temperatures were a result of the dry winds from Pakistan, which was rare for this time of the year.
Revised Forecasts shows light rain or thunder showers
A revised forecast on Thursday morning said that light rain or thundershowers may occur on August 20 evening or night, while a moderate spell is likely on August 21, for which an orange alert has been issued.
Earlier this week, the IMD had predicted thunder showers on Thursday evening itself, with more rain activity on Friday, marking the end of the break phase.
Senior weather officials had said that Delhi would receive south-easterly winds, which will increase the moisture content in the atmosphere by early Thursday morning, that would result in patchy rainfall in some parts of the city by evening.
