The Aadhaar card is a crucial identification document that is required throughout one’s life for almost everything from opening a bank account to getting a voter card, from obtaining a new mobile connection to getting a COVID vaccine jab. It can be obtained even for a newborn.
To register your baby for a vaccine or to get him enrolled in school, this card can be of great use virtually everywhere. A baby might need a card even before it has learned to walk properly.
Here is a detailed guide for obtaining an Aadhaar card for a newborn.
Documents needed
A few documents are needed to issue an Aadhar card to a child below 5 years. These are the original birth certificate of the child and the Aadhaar card of both parents.
All three documents including photocopies should be carried to the Aadhar enrolment center.
Process
You need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment center, but to avoid the wait at the enrolment center, you can book an appointment online by entering all the necessary details.
First, keep all three documents handy.
Visit the UIDAI website and click on ‘Book an appointment’ under the ‘Get Aadhaar’ section.
Enter location details and then click on ‘Proceed to Book an appointment’.
Select the option ‘New Aadhar card’. Then, enter your mobile number and click on Generate OTP.
Enter necessary details on the Personal Details section and click on Proceed.
Choose the time and slot for your appointment and click Next.
Verify all the information entered and click on Submit to book the appointment. You have to visit the Aadhaar enrolment center accordingly to complete the enrolment process in person along with your child.
No biometric data
No biometric data is required for children below the age of 5 years.
The Aadhaar will be processed and authenticated based on the parent’s demographic information and photograph.
Once your child turns five, they would need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment center to give biometric information like fingerprints to register with Aadhaar.
