Just four months before the assembly elections in Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh has resigned as the chief minister. The resignation comes on the indication of a likely change in the Congress state unit which had emerged hours before the meeting of the Congress legislature party in Chandigarh, after 50 legislators wrote to Sonia Gandhi seeking the replacement of the chief minister. The letter seeking a change in guard to the party high command is not the first development in this regard.
Last month, over two dozen congress legislators had protested by raising a banner of revolt, with four ministers of Punjab government meeting All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Punjab Harish Rawat, seeking the resignation of the CM.
Under the leadership of Amarinder, Congress had won 77 seats out of 117 in the assembly elections back in 2017.
