The automobile industry on Wednesday came out with sales figures for August. Vehicle majors like Hyundai, Tata Motors, M&M, Toyota Kirloskar and Honda reported growth riding on festive sentiments, but the market leader Maruti Suzuki posted a decline as a semiconductor shortage hit the industry.
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) sales stood at 1,30,699 units, including exports, a 5% rise in August 2021, amid electronic components shortage. It had sold over 1.26 lakh units in August 2020. The total domestic sales were down 6% to 1,10,080 units, as compared to 1,16,704 units last year. In August 2021 the sales volume was impacted by the shortage of electronic components. The exports were at 20,619 units in August 2021, as compared to 7,920 units in August 2020.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) witnessed a rise of 12.3% in total sales at 59,068 units in August. In 2020 it sold 52,609 units. The domestic sales were up 2.3% to 46,866 units as against 45,809 units in August 2020. Exports also surged to 12,202 units as compared with 6,800 units in August 2020.
A 17% increase in domestic passenger vehicle sales was reported by Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) in August this year from the same month in last year. It sold over 15,973 units, as compared to 13,651 units in August 2020. The company saw a drop of 27% in commercial vehicles sales, as it sold 11,432 commercial vehicles in the domestic market against 15,606 units in August 2020. Exports increased to 3,180 units in August 2021 as against 1,169 units in the year-ago month.
Honda Cars India Ltd reported a 49% increase in domestic sales at 11,177 units in August as compared to August 2020. In the domestic market, the company had sold 7,509 units in August 2020. Exports were recorded at 2,262 units last month as compared with 450 units in August 2020.
Automaker Kia India registered sales of 16,750 units as it saw an increase of 55% as compared to 10,845 units in August 2020. The company also exported 7,752 units of Sonet, 8,619 units of Seltos, and 379 units of Carnival last month to dealers.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor registered twice an increase in domestic vehicles in August at 12,772 units as compared with August 2020. The company had sold 5,555 units in August 2020.
