India has reported over 25,166 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the lowest in 154 days, taking the tally to 3,22,50,679. The death toll rose to 4,32,079 with 437 daily fatalities, according to the Union health ministry data on August 17. The active cases constitute 1.15% of total cases which is the lowest since March 2020. India’s active caseload is currently 3,69,846, the lowest in 146 days.
India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the grim milestone of the one-crore mark on December 19 2020. By May 4, it had crossed two crores and as of June 23, the number of cases had risen to three crores.
The weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.98%, while the daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.61% and has been less than 3% for the last 22 days, data stated. Around 36,830 patients recovered during last 24 hours.
The number of people who have recovered from the disease rose to 3,14,48,754 with the recovery rate at 97.51%, data from the health ministry showed.
Covid-19 tests and vaccination drive
The testing capacity has substantially ramped up to 49.66 crore tests total conducted. Cumulatively, 55.47 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered till Sunday, data showed.
More than 56.81 crore (56,81,32,750) vaccine doses have been provided to states and UTs so far, through all sources and a further 1,09,32,960 doses are in the pipeline.
Of this, the total consumption including wastages is 55,11,51,992 doses (as per data available at 8 am today).
More than 2.25 crore (2,25,52,523) balance and unutilized Covid vaccine doses are still available with the states and UTs and private hospitals to be administered.
The health ministry stressed that more than 70% of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.
