The latest figures of the National Pension System indicate this. In May, the number of employees of Central and Central Public Sector Enterprises who adopted NPS reached a 5-month low. Only 10,081 central employees joined NPS during May.

Reduced staff
According to the data released by the National Statistical Commission, in April 2023, 17,459 employees working in Central Public Sector Enterprises had subscribed to NPS. However, with a decline of 42.5 per cent, only 10,081 employees joined the scheme in the month of May. The number of employees joining NPS in December 2022 was 9,705.

Women’s contribution improving
There has also been a decrease in the number of youth joining central government jobs. In April, 74 percent of the people who opted for NPS were between 18-28 years of age. However, their number decreased to 57 percent in May. However, there has been a marginal improvement in the contribution of women. In May, 22.9 percent women opted for NPS, while in April this figure was 21.9 percent.

Fewer people joined EPFO
Meanwhile, there has also been a decrease in the number of subscribers joining the Employee Provident Fund. In April, 8,91,974 subscribers were linked to EPFO. At the same time, with a decline of 1 percent in May, the number of people joining EPFO decreased to 8,83,176.
