Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio added almost double new wireless subscribers in November 2023 than rival Bharti Airtel. Jio added 34.47 lakh wireless subscribers in the month under consideration, while, rival, Bharti Airtel, gained just 17.47 lakh customers in the same month. While, Aditya Birla Group led telecom, Vodafone Idea (VI) continued to lose subscribers in this segment. VI lost more than 10 lakh wireless subscribers in November, 2023. Although, number of subscribers that left VI in the month under consideration is far lower than how much VI has generally lost every month in last one year.
Anyways, VI continued to lose market share in the wireless segment.
VI’s market share in the wireless segment has fallen to less than 20 per cent in the month under consideration as compared to year ago period. While, Airtel’s market share in the relevant segment ballooned to close to 33 per cent. Whereas, Jio continues to be numero uno player in the industry with 39 per cent market share in this particular segment.
When it comes to governmnet owned telecoms like BSNL and MTNL, these two companies continued losing subscriber count and market share in Novenmber 2023 as well. BSNL lost 9.33 lakh subscribers while, MTNL lost 4,242 subscribers.
As a result, private telecoms now have close to 92 per cent market share in the wireless segment while that of public telecoms further shrunk to 8.15 per cent.
Total wireless subscribers in the country currently stand at 115.42 crore as of November 31, 2023. While, there were total of 3.16 crore wireline subscribers. This takes country’s total telephone subscribers in both wireline and wireless segment to 118.58 crore subscribers.
