Contrary to the common view, Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio has been losing market share in the last one year. While, Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel has been gaining. Jio’s market share has fallen in November 2023 and according to latest data of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), as of November 2023, it has fallen below 52 per cent. While, one year ago, in November 2022, Jio’s market share was 52.12 per cent. While, Bharti Airtel has increased one per cent market share in the telecom industry of the country during the same time period. The Sunil Mittal owned telecom has increased its market share to more than 29 per cent in November 2023 from less than 28 per cent from November 2022.
According to Trai’s data trend, off-late, Airtel has been doing better than Jio in wired telecom segment. As per the latest data released by Trai, in November 2024, Airtel added 22 per cent more wired subscribers than its rival. The Sunil Mittal led telecom added 1.56 lakh new wired customers, while, Jio added only 1.28 lakh subscribers in the same month. In last few months, Airtel has shown a turnaround especially in the wired segment, although in the wired segment, it still remains behind Jio in terms of market share. In the wired segment, Jio’s market share stood at just above 34 per cent while that of Airtel was around 26 per cent.
The second largest telecom player of the country, Bharti Airtel, has lot more catch up to do in the wireless segment to get close to its rival Reliance Jio.
In the wireless segment, Jio continued to add more subscribers every month than any other telecom player in the country. In November 2023, the Mukesh Ambani owned Jio added more than 34 lakh new subscribers while Mittal only added slightly above 17 lakh subscribers.
In fact, in this particular segment, in the in past few months, Jio’s monthly subscriber addition has been almost double of Airtel’s.
In the wireless segment, as of November 2023, Jio’s market share stood at close to 40 per cent while that of its New Delhi based rival stood at around 33 per cent.
