In cases of hit-and-run or cases with vehicles without insurance, the fund will be utilised to meet the expenses.

In the coming days, no road accident victim will be deprived of medical care because of lack of money as the government is in the process of setting up a fund to take care of the immediate hospitalisation expenses of road accident victims.

The ministry of road transport and highways has issued a notification in this regard, according to a report in The Time of India.

Source of funding

The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund will have two modes of funding. One route is through toll collected from travellers on the National Highways. The other will be from the fines that are levied on contractors and authorities responsible for substandard quality of work that cause accidents.

In case of an accident involving a vehicle that is insured, the insurance company concerned will reimburse the hospitalisation costs. In cases of hit-and-run or cases with vehicles without insurance, the fund will be utilised to meet the expenses.

There is a need to find solutions to help victims of hit-and-run cases or cases where the vehicles don’t have insurance. In such cases, the expenses will be borne by the government and the designated agency will disburse the approved claim amount to the hospital. In accident cases with uninsured vehicles, if the vehicle is nabbed and negligence is proven, the expenses will be paid by the owner.

Online portal for faster reimbursements

In addition to this, the government is working towards developing an online application for the fast disposal of compensation cases related to road accidents. The work for this is underway. This portal will allow victims of road accidents to register their claims and the police to upload accident reports. Insurers will then be able to respond to them and thus the process will be fast-tracked.
