In India, only 3 out of 100 families own luxury assets like cars, ACs and washing machines. At the same time, 44%  of families have basic assets like mobile phone, ceiling fan, electricity and LPG stove.

Money 9 has conducted the country’s first and largest personal finance survey which tells you about the state of your pocket. This survey tells how much you earn, how much you spend, how much you invest and where do you invest it? Which families in India own what kind of gadgets, electronic appliances, and how many families in India have all these assets? We have tried to get all this information for you in this survey conducted between May and September this year.
Talking about ownership of assets to better understand it, Money9 listed 28 major assets. These include everything from plasma TVs, laptops to refrigerators, washing machines and LPG stoves, from D2H to cars and bikes. We have divided these things into 3 categories, Basic Assets, Comfort Assets and Luxury Assets.. In Basic Assets we have kept things like mobile phones, ceiling fans, electricity and LPG stoves, for the families who are living with these things.

You can say that they are living a basic life. Apart from these things, comfort assets include two-wheeler, fridge and color TV. It means that the families who have these things are living a comfortable life.. In addition to these two categories of assets, things like cars, AC and washing machines have been given place in the luxury assets. That is, if a family has all these things, then that family is living a luxurious life.

According to this survey of Money 9, about half of the families of the country are living a basic life. In India, only 44 percent of families have four basic assets. At the same time 53% i.e. 53 out of every 100 families are living a comfortable life, because they have three comfort assets in addition to the four basic assets. To go above this, only 3% families in India have luxury assets, i.e. they have basic, comfort assets as well as luxury assets.

One thing is clear from this survey that the number of families having basic and comfort assets is the highest in India and this is the reason that the consumer class in India is considered to be small as per the total population i.e. only 8 to 10 crore people. This shows why big and luxury brands are limited to metros and tier-1, tier-2 cities, why they don’t reach small towns and districts.
