Petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged for 10 consecutive days on April 9. Fuel prices were last revised on March 30, when petrol became cheaper by 22 paise and diesel by 23 paise. Today, a litre of petrol in Delhi would cost you Rs 90.56, while diesel would cost you Rs 80.87. In Mumbai, the price of petrol stood at Rs 96.98 per litre and diesel at Rs 87.96.
Petrol price in Chennai and Kolkata stood at Rs 92.58 and Rs 90.77 per litre, respectively, unchanged from the previous levels. While, diesel prices in Kolkata and Chennai were unchanged at Rs 85.88 and Rs 83.75 per litre, respectively.
Fuel prices differ from state to state as taxes get levied on them by both central as well as state governments along with the freight charges. These taxes make up for 60 per cent of the retail selling price of petrol and over 54 per cent of diesel. Centre levies Rs 32.90 per litre of excise duty on petrol and Rs 31.80 a litre on diesel.

Prices change every morning
The revision in prices of petrol and diesel comes into effect at 6 o’clock every morning. Due to the taxes and levies, retail price of petrol and diesel gets almost doubled. Petrol and diesel prices change daily, depending on the crude prices in the international market. If you see the rise in petrol prices in January and February, then it has become expensive by around 7 rupees per litre. Similarly, diesel has also become costlier by Rs 7.60 per litre.
How to check the price in your city
You can get the price of petrol and diesel through SMS. According to the Indian Oil website, you have to write the RSP and your city code and send it to the number 9224992249. The code for each city is different, which you will get from the IOCL website.
