Petrol, diesel price hold steady on Monday; check rates in top cities

Prices of petrol and diesel held steady for the sixth straight day on April 5. In Delhi, petrol was priced at Rs 90.56 per litre while diesel was being sold at Rs 80.87 per litre, according to data available on the Indian Oil Corporation’s website.

The petrol price in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata stood at Rs 96.98, Rs 92.58 and Rs 90.77 per litre respectively, all unchanged from the previous levels.

Diesel prices in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai stood at Rs 80.87, Rs 87.96, Rs 85.88 and Rs 83.75 per litre respectively. The fuel prices were last changed on March 30.

Fuel prices in India have been rising since the start of 2021 amid high crude oil rates in the international market. However, the prices have held steady in India since March-end.

Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday hinted that fuel rates will drop further in India in the coming days as the situation in the international market has vastly improved.

“Petrol, diesel and LPG prices have started reducing now and they’ll reduce further in the coming days. We had stated earlier also that we’ll transfer benefit from a decrease in crude oil prices in the international market to the end customers,” Pradhan said.

In the global market, oil prices slipped on Monday, paring strong gains made in the previous session after OPEC+ agreed last week to gradually ease some of its production cuts between May and July, news agency Reuters reported earlier today.
