As summer approaches, higher electricity costs loom large in people’s minds, as the typical rise in electricity consumption during the season leads to a surge in prices. The central government has now taken a crucial step in this direction. The government has amended power supply rules to provide affordable power to consumers and help state distribution companies meet demand at a lower cost. For this, the Ministry of Power has finalised the revised structure of the ‘Day-Ahead National Level Merit Order Dispatch’ system intending to reduce the total cost of power generation. Due to this, customers will have to pay less price for electricity.
How is it going to be beneficial?
Under this revised system, the power stations that will generate cheap electricity will be kept on top which essentially means that the power station which will produce electricity at the lowest rate will be given the opportunity to supply first. Also, all this will be finalized a day in advance unlike in the present system when it is finalised 1.5 hours before. The new system will benefit the power stations as well as their consumers, who will be saving in the annual electricity bill.
Electricity theft will stop in Uttar Pradesh
Smart meter and digital solution provider ‘Intellismart’ has received an order from the state government to install 67 lakh prepaid meters in 14 districts. Discom Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL) has issued a letter of intent (LOA) in this regard. Under this project, smart meters will be installed in the districts of Amroha, Baghpat, Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, GB Nagar, Hapur, Meerut, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Rampur, Saharanpur, Sambhal and Shamli. This project will benefit both the government and the consumer. While the consumer will have to pay the electricity bill as much as he would have spent, the presence of smart meters will curb the theft of electricity because it will not be easy to tamper with these meters. The money on due bills will also be saved from being NPA.
