Startups on a hiring spree, freshers set to benefit

Indian firms are expected to double their hiring this year as they plan to expand their business after the pandemic.

Venture capital-funded startups from sectors like edtech, logistics and gig-economy are likely to drive the job market in India as they plan to double their hiring with key focus on freshers in 2021, according to a report in Business Standard.

Vedantu, the digital learning platform, is planning to hire as many as 1,500 fresh employees across various domains which include technology, product, finance, strategy and human resource this year, the report suggested.

Another edtech start-up Lido Learning also plans to recruit 1,000 new employees within the upcoming month to strengthen its present base. Hiring will be made for roles like tutors, customer support personnel, and sales and marketing executives.

“There has been a big surge in start-up hiring in the past two-three months, and it is not only limited to fintech or edtech. All segments, including consumer tech, SaaS (software as a service), gaming, and media tech, are now picking up,” Anshul Lodha, regional director at global recruitment consultancy Michael Page told the publciation.

The outbreak of coronavirus forced companies to freeze new hiring and even cut down on existing employee strength to reduce the salary burden in the backdrop of the lockdown imposed by the central government. With revival of day-today activities and vaccination in process, firms look to bring back their workforce and compensate for last year’s disappointing performance.

Start-ups have seen an uptick in fundraising due to increased demands with companies like PhonePe touching 1-billion monthly payment transaction goals. The company is also looking to fill around 700 new positions this year. Another fintech company, Razorpay which hired 550 employees last year, plans to close 650 fresh positions across domains like engineering, products, customer experience, sales and marketing teams in 2021.

With new job vacancies emerging from all quarters, freshers as well as persistent job seekers can expect a good year professionally. Stay informed and be on the go!
