Approximately six days before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, the Olympic village has registered its first Covid-19 case, according to an AFP report. The president of the organizing committee Seiko Hashimoto and other organisers have confirmed the case.
“We are doing everything to prevent any Covid outbreaks. If we end up with an outbreak we will make sure we have a plan in place to respond,” Seiko Hashimoto said.
The person who tested positive has been isolated and removed from the village where thousands of athletes and officials will reside during the Games.
“There was one person in the village. That was the very first case reported during the screening test in the village,” Masa Takaya, spokesman for the Tokyo organising committee said.
The person is at present quarantined in a hotel, according to the officials.
The Tokyo Olympics had already been postponed by a year because of the pandemic. Organisers of the Games have put in place stringent measures to avoid the spread of coronavirus infections in the village, as per reports.
