Aditya Birla Group-owned teleco, Vodafone Idea continues to lose market share in India’s telecom industry. According to the latest data of Telecom Regularity Authority of India (Trai), the cash-strapped teleco has further lost lakh more than 13 lakh subscribers in single month of December 2023 alone. The debt-laden teleco’s market share now stands at 14 per cent.
While, its rivals both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are fast gaining market share. As of December 2023, the Mukesh Ambani owned teleco’s market share stood at 52 per cent while, Sunil Mittal-owned teleco took 29 per cent share of the telecom pie.
VI’ board is scheduled to meet on Monday February 26, 2024 to discourse on fundraising proposal. On anticipation of which, the scrip had jumped 12 per cent on the BSE on Friday, February 23, 2024.
Similar to VI, public telecos like BSNL and MTNL too are losing market share.
VI, BSNL and MTNL are massively losing subscribers. And this has benefited Jio and Airtel. The top two telecos in the country, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have garnered more and more of the market share as the other three kept on losing customers.

Public telecos’ market share in the wireless segment has shrunk to single digits. While, that of private peers (Jio and Airtel) is above 90 per cent. That’s right, the top two telecos control more than 90 per cent of the telecom industry in this particular segment.
While, in wireline segment, the situation is much better for public telecos. Although, state-owned telecos are behind here as well. But, their market share stands at 28 per cent per cent while, that of private peers stand at close to 72 per cent.
Overall, BSNL,’s market share stands at three per cent as on December 2023.
