Arogya Sanjeevani policy: 5 important things you should know

Insurance regulator Irdai last year directed all insurers to offer Arogya Sanjeevani health insurance policy.

Arogya Sanjeevani is a standard health insurance policy.

Health insurance plays a pivotal role in everybody’s life. Arogya Sanjeevani is a standard health insurance policy that provides wider coverage at affordable premium rates. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irdai) last year directed all insurers to offer Arogya Sanjeevani health insurance. At present, almost 30 health insurance companies are offering this policy to common people. But the features and exclusions of the Arogya Sanjeevani policy are the same. As a result, it is easier for the insurance buyer to make a decision.

Age of entry

Under this policy, the entry age limit for adults is 18 years to 65 years. For children when you buy a family floater plan, it is three months to 25 years.

Here are five most important features of the Arogya Sanjeevani policy which you should know before buying:

1) Sum insured

The Arogya Sanjeevani health insurance comes with a sum insured ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. A policyholder can opt for sum insured according to his or her need.

2) Coverage

Arogya Sanjeevani comes with extensive coverage. The plan covers a wide range of medical expenses, including hospitalisation expenses, day care treatments, AYUSH treatment, ambulance charges and cataract surgery. Pre-existing conditions get covered after a waiting period of 48 months and continuous renewal for four years.

3) Premiums

While terms and conditions of the policy remain the same across insurers, the premium amount for Arogya Sanjeevani policy varies from one insurer to another. But generally the premiums payable under this plan are comparatively lower than the other health insurance plans.

4) Grace period

For the yearly payment mode, a fixed period of 30 days is allowed as a grace period and for other modes of payment (monthly, quarterly, half-yearly) a fixed period of 15 days is allowed as a grace period.

5) No riders

Riders are the additional benefits which you can add to your basic plan to make it more comprehensive. Usually health insurance plans come with a few riders. But the Arogya plan does not provide any riders or add-ons benefit.

Bottom line

Given the sub-limits and capping on the sum insured, Arogya Sanjeevani Policy is a good option for base-level entry as it is simple and easy to understand.
