The awareness level of how to use a LPG connection is quite high. Almost every consumer knows who to get in touch with if there is an accidental leakage. But did you know every consumer enjoys an accident insurance cover of Rs 6 lakh apart from a medical expenses coverage of Rs 2 lakh.
Insurance offer
State oil marketing companies (OMC) such as Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation and their dealers opt for an LPG gas insurance policy which is a group insurance cover.
The comprehensive insurance policy is bought under ‘Public Liability Policy for Oil Industries’ to provide speedy relief to the affected persons in case of LPG-related accidents.
The premium is borne by the companies and dealers and the customers do not pay for it.
According to information furnished by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to the Rajya Sabha in July 2019, all victims of any accident related to LPG cylinders can get this cover for free.
The amount
The policy provides for coverage of Rs 6 lakh if case of death due to accident caused by LPG cylinders.
Besides, it also covers medical expenses of up to Rs 30 lakh per family with a maximum of Rs 2 lakh per person.
In case of property damage, it pays a maximum of Rs 2 lakh per event if the authorised customer’s registered premises has been damaged.
Filing a claim
The victim or family members of the victim have to inform the LPG dealer in writing at the earliest after the accident takes place. The customer/victim does not have to inform anyone else for LPG insurance related issues.
The dealer then contacts the OMC and the insurer. After due verification on behalf of the OMC and insurers, you have to fill the claim formalities.
It will take at least 10-14 working days to process the claim and the amount will be credited to the bank account of the customer or the next of kin.
