Indian benchmark equity indices extended their winning streak for sixth straight session on Thursday with Sensex settling above Mt 61k for the first time. A positive trend in the global markets also supported the sentiment.
Sensex jumped 568.90 points or 0.94% to settle at a fresh closing peak of 61,305.95. The 30-share barometer touched an intraday record high of 61,353.25.
Likewise, Nifty advanced 176.80 points or 0.97% to a new lifetime peak of 18,338.55. On Intraday basis, the 50-share gauge topped a fresh high of 18,350.25.
ITC, rising around 3% was the top Sensex gainer followed by HDFC Bank, PowerGrid, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank and NTPC. TCS, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finance, Asian Paints and Bharti Airtel were among the laggards.
Of the 30 Sensex shares, 22 closed in the green and 8 ended with losses.
Market will remain closed on Friday for Dussehra.
In Asia, stock exchanges in Seoul and Tokyo ended in the green, while Shanghai was in the red.
