The Government of India (GoI) on Wednesday put out a notification on MGNREGA wage hike for different states of the country for financial year 2024-25 (FY25). The new wage rates will be effective from April 1, 2024. According to the notification, wages under the employment generation programme will be highest in Haryana, while, remuneration will be lowest in North Eastern states of Arunachal and Nagaland. The new wage rate in both these states will be Rs 234 per day. While, it will be Rs 272 per day in Manipur. It would be Rs 374 in Haryana.
Wages in North East states continue to remain comparatively at lower side. At higher end of the spectrum, the wage rates are above Rs 300 levels in some states like Haryana, Punjab, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, etc while, wages in the North East states hover around Rs 250 mark.
The government augmented wages by highest margin of Rs 34 in Goa from Rs 322 per day in current fiscal to Rs 356 in FY25, while the lowest hike was of Rs 7 in Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand. In both these states, wages have been hiked to Rs 237 per day for the next fiscal from Rs 230, currently.
Overall, on national average , wages have been hiked by Rs 28.4 to Rs 289.7 per day from Rs 261.3 per day.

In the recently presented interim Budget 2024, the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman had revised budgetary outlay for MGNREGA to Rs 86,000 crore for FY25 from Rs 60,000 crore, earlier.
According to latest data available, so far, in FY24, the GoI created 8.27 crore jobs under its flagship employment generation programme.
