Smartphones have now become an indispensable part of our lives, especially in these Covid times . With more than 622 million smartphone users by end of 2020. India is the second-largest market in the world after China.
According to a report by IAMAI-Kantar Cube on active Internet users, 323 million are urban users whereas 299 million hailed from rural India.
“The number of active internet users in the country is likely to grow nearly 45% to 900 million by 2025 compared to 622 million as of last year,” the report noted. By 2025, there would be a greater number of internet users in rural India than in urban India, it further added.
The Indian smartphone market added 38 million units, in Jan-Mar 2021 period, according to International Data Corporation’s (IDC) quarterly data. Xiaomi maintained its numero uno position with 27.2% share in the quarter followed by Samsung with 19% share and Vivo by 17.2% in Q12021. From Xiaomi, the Mi10i was the leading 5G model in Q12021. Also, the top-8 online models were from Xiaomi/POCO, with a 30% contribution.
Rising disposable income, cheaper internet, and the need to always stay connected are some of the factors that have led the Indian smartphone market to grow into one of the largest smartphone markets in the world. However, according to Statista, India’s smartphone penetration rate is still relatively low as compared to other markets across the globe.
According to a Statista report, in March 2021, the average selling price of smartphones in India was around Rs 11,425 in 2020. While around 84% of the smartphones in the country are below Rs 14,467 in 2020, the average selling price is expected to rise as 5 G-enabled phones started to be available in the market in 2021.
