For broadcast messaging, WhatsApp has now introduced a new feature called ‘Channels.’ WhatsApp had announced the introduction of the hannels in March. However, initially, this feature will be available to users in Colombia and Singapore. In the coming days, Channels will also be introduced in India and other countries.
What are the features of ‘Channels’?
A channel is a one-way broadcast tool on which a channel adminstrator can send text messages, photos, videos, stickers, and polls to their followers. A channel can be set to public, allowing anyone to search and find it. Administrators can invite people to follow their channel via chat, email, or an online-posted invitation link. The number of followers will be displayed. The channel will have a handle, and below the name, the number of followers will be shown. Additionally, a description can be added to the channel. The profile photo and phone number of the admin or participants in the channel will not be visible to followers. WhatsApp has implemented this to ensure the privacy and security of personal information.
WhatsApp stated that it will store the channel’s history on its servers for 30 days. However, end-to-end encryption will not be available in channels to allow access to a large number of users. However, the company has mentioned that it may introduce end-to-end encrypted channels for some groups in the future, such as NGOs or health organizations.
